The detail that separates a real repoint from a smear is depth and hardness. We take the old mortar out to at least 20 mm, often twice the joint width. We match colour, and we match hardness. A bag of Type S on a 1940s soft brick is how you destroy a wall while "fixing" it.
Pre-sale work is a big part of this service. Inspectors flag recessed joints. Lenders want them addressed. We quote to the report and get it done on a closing timeline when we can.

When to Call a Masonry Contractor
Crumbling or recessed mortar
If you can push a key more than about 6 mm into a joint, the mortar has lost its bond. That's the time, not after the brick starts moving.
White staining (efflorescence)
Chalky white on the brick face means water is moving through the wall. Repointing the joints is often the actual fix. Cleaning the stain alone isn't.
Pre-sale home prep
Tuckpointing before you list (or after an inspection) is one of the cleaner ways to take a masonry deficiency off the table.
Mortar washing out of a chimney
Chimneys go first. If the house walls still look decent but the stack is receding, start there.
Why Fraser Valley mortar doesn't last forever
Mortar is meant to be slightly weaker than the brick. It takes the weather. Over 25 to 30 years in this valley, joints recede, sand starts to run out, and the wall starts holding water instead of shedding it.
Exposed walls (west and south, no overhang) and chimneys go faster, sometimes 15 to 20 years. Sheltered walls last longer. That's why we don't automatically repoint a whole house when only the weather face is gone.
Repointing below about 5°C is a gamble. Mortar that freezes before it cures is weak from day one. We'll wait or we'll protect. We won't pretend a January smear is a 30-year joint.
Materials and Methods
Type O and lime-rich mixes
For older, softer brick. These mixes can take movement and let the wall breathe. Hard cement on soft brick is a common, expensive mistake.
Type N
Most modern above-grade brick. The default for a lot of Fraser Valley homes from the 70s onward, once we've checked the original.
Colour matching
We sample. Mortar colour is sand, cement, and sometimes pigment. A bright grey joint on old brown mortar reads as a patch from the street.
Joint profile
Concave (tooled) joints shed water best. Flush joints look modern. Weathered joints suit some older work. We match what the wall had, unless that profile was the problem.
What Drives the Cost
Nobody should expect a fake square-foot price from a website. Access, height, matching, and what's behind the masonry move the number more than the brochure photo. Here's what we look at before we quote.
How much of the wall is gone
We price by area and by how deep the joints need to be cut. A few bad patches is a different job than every joint on a two-storey elevation.
Access
Scaffolding on a chimney or a tall wall is a real cost. Ground-level garden walls aren't.
Heritage matching
Soft brick, unusual colour, and the need to hand-chisel instead of grind all add time. Worth it. Faster methods blow up old brick.
What Goes Wrong When It's Done Cheap
Smearing new mortar over old
If you didn't cut the joint out, you didn't repoint. You painted the crack. It fails fast.
Mortar that's too hard
The brick then becomes the sacrificial material. Faces pop off. That's worse than the original recessed joints.
Grinding so deep the brick edges chip
Angle grinders are fast and dangerous to the arris (the brick edge). We cut the joint, not the brick.

Mortar matching
We mix for colour and hardness against the original. Test patches on a hidden spot when the match is picky.
Repointing in lifts
Mortar goes in layers so it doesn't shrink and crack. Each lift sets slightly before the next.
Joint tooling
We finish to the original profile, concave, flush, or weathered, and strike it clean.
Cleanup
Haze and crumbs come off the brick face. Optional sealer only after the joints have cured.
