Why stone veneer fails in Chilliwack (and why rainscreens aren't optional here)
Manufactured stone is a cement product. It absorbs water. Joints absorb water. Wind-driven rain doesn't care that the stone 'looks thick.' Without a drainage path, water sits against the weather-resistive barrier, then against the sheathing. Freeze-thaw then pops stones off the wall, usually at the bottom where the water pooled.
A weep screed at the base is the exit. Code wants it at least 100 mm (4 inches) above soil and about 50 mm (2 inches) above a paved surface. Stone that runs down into a flower bed looks seamless on day one and rotten on year four.
We use a drainage mat (rainscreen) behind adhered stone on exterior walls. It creates the air gap that brick veneer gets for free. In this climate, that's the difference between a cladding and a sponge.
Materials and Methods
Manufactured stone veneer
Also called cultured stone. Lightweight concrete units with a textured face. Fast to install, lots of colour options, and the product most people mean when they search stone veneer.
Natural thin stone
Real stone, sawn to veneer thickness. Heavier, more expensive, and it reads as stone in a way some manufactured products don't. Still needs the same drainage details.
Lath and scratch coat
Paper-backed metal lath fastened to studs, then a mortar scratch coat. This is the grip. Skip it or fasten it to foam without the right system, and the stone lets go.
Weep screed and drainage mat
The unglamorous parts. The screed lets water out at the bottom. The mat keeps an open path behind the stone. These are not upgrades. They're the install.
What Drives the Cost
Nobody should expect a fake square-foot price from a website. Access, height, matching, and what's behind the masonry move the number more than the brochure photo. Here's what we look at before we quote.
Coverage and corners
Stone is sold by the square foot, but corners, sills, and keystones are extra pieces. A fireplace with a lot of returns costs more than a flat wall of the same area.
Tear-off of failed veneer
If we're replacing a bad install, demolition, disposal, and substrate repair are their own costs. Sometimes the stone can be saved. Often it can't.
Height
Scaffolding and staging on a two-storey elevation add time. Interior fireplaces don't.
Stone grade
There's a wide spread between builder-grade manufactured stone and premium or natural thin stone. We'll show you samples and be honest about what you're looking at.
What Goes Wrong When It's Done Cheap
No weep screed
If you can't see a screed or a clear drainage gap at the bottom, water is likely sitting in the wall. This is the #1 shortcut we see on failed jobs.
Stone installed over stucco or painted siding
Stone needs a prepared substrate. Buttering it onto an existing finish is how it peels off in sheets.
Film-forming sealers
A shiny sealer looks 'protected' and traps moisture in a cement stone. If we seal, it's a penetrating, breathable product, and only after the wall can drain.
No movement joints
Long runs of adhered stone crack at inside corners and over big openings if they can't move. We put joints where the wall needs them, even if they're less pretty in the rendering.

Design and stone selection
We look at the wall, the exposure, and the look you want. We sample stone and talk through manufactured vs natural thin stone.
WRB, rainscreen, and weep screed
Weather barrier first, lapped correctly over the screed. Drainage mat on exterior walls. This is the part you never see in a finished photo, and it's the part that matters.
Lath and scratch coat
Metal lath fastened to framing, then a scratch coat left to cure enough to hang stone.
Setting the stone
We dry-fit the pattern, mix corner pieces in, and set stone in polymer-modified mortar. Joints are tooled, not smeared.
Cleanup and optional sealer
Haze comes off, site gets cleaned, and we only seal if the stone and the exposure call for it.
