Materials and Methods
Clay brick
Fired clay is the classic. Colour comes from the clay body and the firing, not a surface coat, so it doesn't fade the way painted block does. We source new and salvaged stock for matches.
Concrete brick
More uniform, often cheaper, and common on newer Fraser Valley builds. Fine for many walls if the mix, joint, and sealer are right.
Type N mortar
The workhorse for above-grade brick in our climate. Strong enough, still slightly sacrificial so the brick doesn't take the freeze-thaw hit.
Type S mortar
Higher strength, used below grade and on retaining work. Too hard for most older brick. We don't use it as a default on heritage walls.
What Drives the Cost
Nobody should expect a fake square-foot price from a website. Access, height, matching, and what's behind the masonry move the number more than the brochure photo. Here's what we look at before we quote.
Access and height
A garden wall you can work from the ground is a different job than a two-storey elevation that needs scaffolding. Scaffolding, not brick, is often the line item that surprises people.
Matching existing brick
New walls are straightforward. Matching a 1970s red or a handmade older brick takes hunting, sometimes salvage, and extra labour on the blend.
Footings and drainage
If the old wall failed because the footing was wrong, rebuilding on the same footing is a waste of money. We price the base properly.
Disposal
Tear-down and haul-away of old masonry is heavy. It's in the quote, not a surprise at the end.
What Goes Wrong When It's Done Cheap
Mortar harder than the brick
Modern premix is often too hard for older brick. The brick face then spalls because it can't move or breathe. We mix for the wall in front of us.
No expansion joints
Long brick walls need room to move. Skip the joints and you get regular cracks at the corners and over openings.
First course set on dirt
Brick walls need a footing. Garden borders sometimes get away with a compacted base. Anything taller than a planter doesn't.

The first course is the most important. We dry-lay, check dimensions and alignment, then set it in mortar.
Coursing and bonding
Each course is laid with consistent joint thickness and a proper bond. Running bond for most walls, more complex patterns for feature work.
Jointing and finishing
Joints are tooled concave so they shed water. We clean the face as we go and do a final wash if needed.

We walk the wall with you, clean the site, and confirm you're happy before we leave.
How to tell if a brick wall needs a mason, not a patch
Hairline cracks in mortar can wait. A brick you can wiggle with your fingers can't. Stair-step cracks that run through several courses usually mean movement in the footing or a rusted lintel above a window. White chalky staining (efflorescence) means water is moving through the wall.
If a home inspection flagged the masonry, bring the report. We quote to the line items on it and write a scope the buyer, seller, or lender can actually use.
